A dryer that has slowed down is usually being throttled by its vent rather than by anything inside the cabinet. We measure the duct before opening the machine, because replacing a heating element on a restricted run buys a few months and no more. It is also a safety matter: restricted venting is the mechanism behind most dryer fires, and we will say so plainly rather than work around it.

• The drum turns but there is no heat

  On electric, a failed element or an opened thermal cut-off. The cut-off almost never opens without a reason worth finding.

• Two or three cycles to dry a load

  Restricted airflow, nine times in ten. A long, crushed or lint-packed duct is the most common thing we find.

• The machine shuts off after a few minutes

  A thermal cut-out doing its job because heat has nowhere to go. A new one without a cleared duct repeats the failure.

• Thumping while the drum turns

  Worn rollers, a tired idler pulley or a separating belt. Inexpensive early, expensive once the belt takes the pulley with it.

• A burning smell during the cycle

  Lint around the heater housing. Stop the machine, unplug it and call the same day.

• Diagnostics

  Duct static pressure, element resistance, igniter current and thermostat continuity, all measured.

• Parts replacement

  Elements, igniters, coil sets, thermal cut-offs, thermostats, rollers, idlers, belts and control boards.
